Feb 3, 2010 Delaware Planning

On the evening of February 3, the Delaware Planning commission heard a preliminary proposal to construct a Turkey Hill conveneince store and gas station at the Northeast corner of US 23 and SR 315 / Stratford Rd. The property is currently occupied by Garth's Auction house and an historic home / barn.

Garth's is planning to move, and the owner of the home / barn wants to both protect the historic legacy and generae some income from the property. The plan is to build the store at the intersection and donate the rest of the property to the Delaware Historical Society. Everyone present supported the donation to the Historical Society, but the construction of a convenience store / gas station brought out opposition.

Residents of Stratford expressed a variety of concerns for the safety of their neighborhood and the additional traffic that would come through it. On belahf of the Observatory, Tom Burns reminded the Planning Commission of how the the strict lighting code implemented by Delaware was vital to the Observatory's mission and hoped that any construction at that location would adhere to the codes.

Because this partcular parcel is at the 23 / 315 intersection, not directly adjacent to the Observatory, the Observatory has not taken a position for or against the proposed development.
